Annibale Orgas (1585–1629): Angelus ad pastores ait, Hodie Christus natus est…

The surviving musical output of Annibale Orgas (1585–1629) – first Italian maestro di cappella of the Wawel Cathedral – comprises, apart from the Sacrarum cantionum (FMP C/XII), also two motets for eight voices and organ (Angelus ad pastores and Hodie Christus natus est), the 4-part a cappella motet De Sancto Stanislao (opening with the words Vir inclite Stanislae), as well as an incomplete copy of the motet De Sancto Martino (with the incipit Deus noster). Orgas also authored occasional pieces related to major historical events, two of which have been preserved to our times, unfortunately only in the form of verbal texts (Ode inter declamationem, quâ cohortabamur nostros ad arma contra Turcam strenuè capienda, decantata and Ode inter declamationem epitaphiam, quâ laudabantur ij, qui cecidêre in bello contra Turcam, decantata). In the present volume we are editing the above mentioned pieces, as well both verbal texts of two occasional pieces.
